When looking at a typical teenager on his 16th birthday, what might be his first thought? Maybe something like “Now I have my license. I can drive wherever I want whenever I want!” Seconds later, he zooms out of the driveway at the speed of 55 miles per hour and it’s noticed that he is not wearing his seat belt and is busy posting pictures on Instagram. These are just a couple of reasons why about 4000 teens lose their lives in car crashes each year. Not only is the effect detrimental to those lives but also to the lives of their families. Let us take texting and driving for example. It is, unfortunately, very prevalent among teenagers today. But let’s be real: it is better to cut down longevity or to cease the direction of eyes to those potential life-threatening devices? It is obvious to pick option two but it is not so obvious to apply that principle. According to a AAA poll, 94% of teen drivers acknowledge the dangers of texting and driving, but 35% admitted to doing it anyway. Whatever the cause might be it becomes the duty of every driver to shift his/her eyes towards the road, not towards the camera. If we take a logical perspective, most types of inventions are created for an effective purpose. A seat belt is made for safety, not for strangling! 50% of the people who lose their lives in collisions annually would still be alive if they had worn a seat belt. Just one click contributes in saving thousands of lives. Don’t control the seat belt but let it control you and your welfare. A drink of water is to nourishment, but a gulp of alcohol is to destruction. Based on the research of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), more young people abuse alcohol than any other substance. In fact, underage drivers are 17% more likely to be involved in a fatal car crash with alcohol in their system. This can cause one to become unaware which potentially increases the risk of a brutal wreck. It is now time to replace Driving Under The Influence of Alcohol to Driving Under the Influence of Intelligence. At this point, the question that automatically arises is that what is the solution to prevent catastrophes on the road? Not only is the responsibility on the drivers’ shoulders, but it is up to their parents. Parents are every child’s best friend in this world and it is extremely essential for them to make their children mindful of keeping themselves and others protected on the road. This includes reinforcement of the guidelines since they are meant to prioritize safety. If there is one element that an individual can embed into his or her mind, it is the following: driving wisely and thoughtfully secures every car from a rough patch , every driver from an injury, and every family from an eternal breakdown.
