Put it Away

Katherine M

I am a SENIOR in high school. I am taking my driver’s license next week. MY MOM. My MOM was hit 20 years ago by a senior in high school, who was playing with her tape player(yea-1990’s cell phone version). My MOM—–3 surgeries, pain doctors, later, her lifeless body does not get to see my tennis matches, plays, or cheer football games. TOO MUCH PAIN!!! My MOM. Everything to me. I lost many memories because of that GIRL-HITTING MY MOM. I’m getting ready to drive. I see my friends in their cars texting. I say, ARE YOU GOING TO BE THAT GIRL, TOO AND KILL SOMEONE ELSE”S MEMORIES-or worse. PUT IT AWAY . . .

This free verse writing entry seeks to show how my life was effected by distracted driving and how my past has influenced me to be an advocate for safe driving while also asking me to reflect upon my own driving as I prepare to take my driving test. I don’t want anyone else to ever have to go through what I have gone through.
