It Was By Chance
8:26 a.m. It was by chance that I met with you that morning. My heart always felt like it was going to explode every second I was with you. 12:57 p.m. It was by chance that you asked me to go out with you that one summer day. But it was obvious that I was going to say yes. 6:29 p.m. It was by chance that we took that spontaneous night drive to the beach. The windows were down and we were blasting Calvin Harris on the radio. 8:22 p.m. It was by chance that Kory texted you to ask you when you would be home. You said it would only take a second to respond. But it was your choice to check your phone. 8:26 p.m. That was the time I saw on your wristwatch when the car flipped over. That was when day turned to night. 11:13 p.m. It was by chance that God chose to take me home that night. And now I watch over you, on every tear-filled night.
This is a poem that shows the perspective of a girl who passed away because of her boyfriend, who chose to answer a text message. The times represent day turning to night, and how one’s life can be turned upside down in four short minutes.
